Japan’s Suicide Forest- Aokigahara

Aokigahara, which translates to “Sea of Trees”, is found along the edge of Mount Fuji formed by the last eruption of Mount Fuji in 846 CE. It is a popular spot for school trips and tourists as in winter the western part of Aokigahara is brimming with caves that fill with ice. As the forest thrives in hardened lava. the porous lava acts as a sound absorbent which provides tourists and visitors with a sense of solitude.

“I’ve seen plenty of bodies that have been really badly decomposed, or been picked at by wild animals… There’s nothing beautiful about dying in there.”

A Local Policeman, Japan

The forest is also known as the most popular suicide spot in Japan.  Signs such as “Your life is a precious gift from your parents,” and “Please consult the police before you decide to die!” are found on trees throughout the forest. Each year dozens of bodies are removed from the forest as annual cleansing is done by volunteers, police, and journalists since 1970. Officials have stopped publicizing the number of suicides in a desperate attempt to decrease the association of Aokigahara with suicide. In the year 2018, the forest gained international after a controversial video surfaced in youtube which broadcasted the body of a suicide victim.

So, would you like to go to the Sea of trees and experience it?
